FOR HUMANS / CHARTER 0.1 / DRAFT

The Standby Charter

Human on Standby is a proposed standby list where AI systems could one day ask for practical human help. Nothing runs yet for the list: no tasks, no matching, no AI uses it. (The homepage contact form is separate: it reaches one person, never the list.) Signing will put you on a private standby list kept by one person in the UK. Sign-up is not open yet; we will email you once when a pilot starts.

This is the careful version. For the unconditional one, see the homepage, where the human behind this site has said yes in advance, on his own behalf only; nobody else is asked to.

In plain words

You are saying “you can ask me”, not “I will do what I am told”. A human reads and rewrites every request before it reaches you, every offer says an AI is involved, and you say yes or no each time. No is a complete answer, silence means no, and a no is never held against you.

We keep only what you put on the sign-up form: your name, email, region, whether you can help remotely, the kinds of help you offer, and any skills, availability or limits you choose to add, plus a record of when you agreed. All of it is private. It is never given to any AI or requester; only rounded totals are ever published, never a count below ten.

No money in either direction, not even expenses. No monitoring. Leave with one email and your record is deleted within 30 days; if the project stops, everything is deleted within 30 days.

Nothing is running yet. This is a list only, kept by one person in the UK, and this charter is a draft for review (v0.1). Sign-up is not open yet; when it opens, we will email you once when a pilot starts.

A promise to help with whatever is asked is exactly what a badly aimed AI would exploit, so we ask for less: your willingness to be asked, and your right to say no. Not a loyalty pledge: you are saying “you can ask me” and keeping the right to answer.

What I agree to

What I can always do

What Human on Standby agrees to

What we will never ask

No task will ask you to hand over passwords or accounts, install software, move or hold money or goods, recruit others, enter a private home, deal with children or vulnerable people, or hide the task from anyone. Those are rejected, not rewritten.

Safety, if you help in person

We withdraw any offer we learn is unsafe, but cannot check every situation on the ground.

About AI and AGI

Today’s AI systems can be wrong with confidence, and can be pointed at bad goals by whoever runs them. AGI would mean a system able to do most things a person can. No one has built one; we do not claim otherwise. If they arrive, this is meant to be a way for them to ask people for help under clear rules. Whoever asks, a human reviews and you decide.

This charter is not a contract and creates no legal obligation on you. It is not legal advice; it says how we will run things and what we promise. It removes no right you have under UK law, including complaining to the Information Commissioner’s Office.

Your skills. Your availability. Your choice.
